Chin Surgery (Mentoplasty)
Many of Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon, William M. Portnoy, MD, FACS'
New York City patients seek chin surgery to achieve facial balance and
harmony. Chin Surgery is performed to reshape, reduce, or enhance the size
of the chin to restore facial harmony and chin projection.
Chin surgery is an elective facial plastic surgery that
entails the restructuring and reformation of the “mentum” region of the
face. The mentum is the known as the portion of the jaw or mandible.
Sometimes, the jaw region can be quite prominent, or quite deficient causing
an unbalanced facial appearance. Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon,
William M. Portnoy, MD, FACS can sculpt the chin through mentoplasty plastic
surgery, and achieve a more aesthetically pleasing profile (for both men and
women).
To augment the chin: the board certified facial plastic surgeon begins
the mentoplasty surgery (chin surgery) by making an incision either
in the natural crease line just under the chin or inside the mouth, where
gum and lower lip meet. By gently stretching this tissue, the surgeon
creates a space where a medical implant can be inserted. This chin implant,
made of of silicone, teflon, or dacron feels much like natural tissue
normally found in the chin, is available in a wide variety of sizes,
textures, and shapes and Doctor Portnoy will discuss this with you during
your consultation at his New York City practice. After implantation, the
surgeon uses fine sutures to close the incision. When the incision is inside
the mouth, no scarring is visible. If the incision is under the chin, the
scar is usually imperceptible.
In chin reduction surgery: incisions are made either in the
mouth or under the chin. The surgeon sculpts the bone to a more pleasing
size. For orthognathic surgery, the surgeon will make an incision inside the
mouth and reposition the facial bones.
